Epic games against Apple
Epic games is well known for its popular game, Fortnite. If you haven’t played it before, it is a battle royale game, where 100 people land on an island full of weapons, and the last man standing wins. While the battle royale concept itself is very exciting for any gamer in this era, the game provides cosmetics to buy. This pushes the gamer to spend a few bucks in the game, and get their favourite cosmetics to flex.
Epic games announced the launch of the game for iOS devices on March 2018. Since then, the payment method was through apple’s services. Also, Apple’s Appstore policies state that 30% of the payment goes to them, Which Epic did not like.
What move did epic make? Epic introduced their own payment system in the game for players to make a direct payment to the developers themselves. But apple did not like anyone not following their policies. Apple removed Fortnite from the Appstore as soon as they found out about the new payment method. Did they stop at that? No.
Apple states that Epic games breached the Appstore policies, and violated the rules. So, apple announced that they will be removing support for Apple's Developer tools for unreal engine. This is used by the developers to understand the working of the game on Apple’s platforms. Which means, if they don’t have access to the tools, then they can’t provide updates to their games. This could be a potential threat for many games in the Appstore.
Following apple, Google’s Play store had similar payment policies, so they removed Fortnite as well. Microsoft, on the other hand, announced that they support Epic against Apple. The sole reason being, Microsoft’s Forza games Line up was created using Unreal Engine, hence no support for unreal engine. “Developers cannot use different game engines for different platforms. This move by Apple could potentially harm many developers.”
The court took action on this matter, and gave a partial win to both parties. Apple can remove Fortnite from the Appstore, but are not allowed to revoke access to developer tools for unreal engine. This decision isn’t permanent. On September 28, it will be decided whether this measure will be put into action.
